Sutrayan sources FSC-certified engineered pine and birch from Indian mills, finishes every piece with water-based low-VOC stains, ships in fully recyclable triple-layered corrugated packaging, and makes every piece to order so we waste less wood than warehoused decor brands. Every piece carries a 90-day finish warranty and a 7-day no-questions return.
Our wood: FSC-certified, regrown, Indian
Our substrate is engineered pine and birch sourced from FSC-certified Indian suppliers. FSC certification means the forest that grew the tree is managed to international standards for regrowth, biodiversity, and workers’ rights. The engineered panel format means we use the whole tree — including the sections that would be discarded as cut-offs in a solid-timber supply chain.
Engineered wood in the Sutrayan stack uses non-urea-formaldehyde adhesives where available (specifically our MR-grade birch ply) and E1-rated emissions on the standard pine MDF we use for structural layers. We do not source tropical hardwoods or any CITES-restricted species.
Finishes: water-based, low-VOC, non-toxic
Every piece is stained and sealed with water-based, low-VOC coatings. Our standard finish stack is a water-based wood stain (ASTM-D4236-compliant, non-toxic after cure) followed by a satin polyurethane sealer. We avoid nitrocellulose lacquers and oil-based stains entirely — both have solvent off-gassing profiles that are inappropriate for indoor home decor.
Where ornamental detail needs colour — the accent strokes on the Shree Yantra, the petal-tips on the Bloom Whirl mandala, the country labels on the World Map — we hand-apply water-based acrylic colours certified safe to ASTM D-4236 (the US non-toxic standard for artists’ materials).
Made-to-order: less warehousing, less waste
We don’t warehouse finished pieces. Every Sutrayan piece is made to order — we only cut the wood once your order enters the queue. The upside: no unsold inventory ends up at end-of-season clearance, no piece sits for a year waiting for a buyer, and we can compute wood usage per SKU with high accuracy and nest cut-paths on the laser bed to minimise offcut.
Offcut wood is collected and repurposed into coasters (see our Layered Wood Coaster Set SKU), small shelf brackets, and packing wedges inside the shipping cartons. Sawdust from sanding is composted locally with a partner waste-management vendor.
Packaging: fully recyclable, right-sized
Every piece ships in a triple-layered corrugated-cardboard carton with custom-moulded recycled-pulp foam inserts. Both the carton and the inserts are fully recyclable through India’s standard municipal paper-recycling stream. We don’t use polystyrene, bubble wrap, or polythene chips — they’re durable in transit but they don’t break down.
The box is right-sized to the piece, not padded with filler. This keeps dimensional weight low (lower shipping emissions per piece) and removes the fluff that most customers identify immediately as waste. For B2B corporate gifting orders we offer plain kraft outer cartons instead of branded print, keeping the unboxing experience focused on the piece.
Our artisan partnership — fair work, local training
The artisans who finish every Sutrayan piece are staff — not contractors paid by the piece. We pay above the local state minimum, run a six-month apprenticeship program for new hires, and train apprentices in the full layered-wood craftsmanship process rather than compartmentalising skills. This is a deliberate choice: it makes each artisan slower to train but means every piece is finished by someone who understands the whole work.
We have a multi-generational craft tradition in wood, leather, and textile. Our workshop draws on that local skill base rather than importing labour — 100% of our artisan team lives within 5 km of our workshop. Sustainability for a handcraft brand has to include the people: a practice that trains local apprentices and pays proper wages is the difference between a craft tradition that survives and one that gets lost to the next generation.
Built to last: warranty and lifecycle
We stand behind every piece with a 90-day finish warranty and a 7-day no-questions return. The finish warranty covers any sealer or stain defect that appears during normal indoor use; we refinish or replace at our cost. The return policy covers change-of-mind during the 7 days after delivery — we collect the piece at no charge.
A well-made 3D wooden wall art piece is a 10-to-20-year product. The engineered-wood substrate doesn’t warp if kept out of direct monsoon spray, the satin polyurethane sealer doesn’t yellow, and the layered-wood design doesn’t date the way trend prints do. The sustainability of a craftwork piece is as much about lifespan as sourcing: the longer a piece stays beautiful on a wall, the smaller its per-year footprint becomes.
